In the book “Sammy Keyes” the author Wendelin Van Draanen, tells about a girl that doesn’t have a father and her mother dumped her at Grams’ so she could run off Hollywood and become a movie star, and about two weeks later Sammy starts studying at a born school, and the principal is accusing her of stealing his cross, and she tries to prove that she is innocent. However, in the book “Inside Out” Francisco, the protagonist, is a Mexican boy that moved to the United States with no understanding about English, and when he went school for the first time he didn’t understand anything that his classmates and teachers were saying. Both Francisco and Sammy are persistent because Sammy wants to prove that she isn’t a thief, and Francisco is trying to learn english by himself, but they act differently in all their acts, for example: Francisco is shy, and he likes to be alone, however, Sammy is extroverted and she likes to talk with everybody, but both of them are in new places and they are not familiarized with their new houses, so they faced some problems because the people that they would have to conceive with still didn’t trust them, and they were different from the others they didn’t socialize so well.
Did you ever think that you have a specific problem to solve and no one has this problem? Francisco in “Inside Out” and Sammy in “Sammy Keyes and the Sisters of Mercy” feel this way about different problems. Francisco feels like this because he is a Spanish speaker ,but he lives in the U.S.A. and at his first time at school in 1st grade, everybody knew how to speak English ,but he didn’t, so he doesn’t understand anything that the teachers and his classmates say. However, Sammy feels like this because she needs to prove that she didn’t steal the cross of the principal, Father Mayhew, and he is accusing her for no reasons, just because she is new and he doesn’t trust her.
One of the strongest traits of Sammy is that she is extroverted, she likes to talk with everybody and she doesn’t care about what people think about her, like when she is painting the wall of the Father Mayhew’s office and she meet Sister Bernice she talked with her like they already know each other for more than one year. But on the other hand Francisco is shy and he has some problems with self confidence because he went to school for the first time and everything it’s new for him and no one understands what he says and he doesn’t understand what his classmates are saying so they can’t talk to each other. So they are really different in this aspect of personality.
In our world we don’t always get what we want at a snap of a finger, sometimes we have to be persistent to get something, and that’s not always easy, sometimes we have to prove something or even submit ourselves to things we never imagined we would. And when you’re persistent, It’s good, because you won’t give up easily on what you want. This trait is present in both characters, even though Sammy and Francisco have completely different personalities, they are both persistent with what they want. Even Francisco did not understand anything the people at his school did, and with no support to learn English he didn’t give up and always that the teacher was saying he paid attention, closed his eyes and tried to imagine what the words that Miss Callapino was saying. Similarly, Sammy was being accused of stealing the cross of Father Mayhew and she started an investigation to prove that she isn’t a thief and that she would not give up until she has concrete proof that she didn’t do that and until she discovers who really stole the cross.
With this we can conclude that they are very different in their personalities and the way they act. However Sammy and Francisco have some similarities too, because they both are in new places and they faced some problem in these new places like every single person, but their problem is not like a day to day problem, and even though they are children they found a solution. The readers may understand that in “Sammy Keyes and the Sisters of Mercy” the main idea is that in your life you will always have some obstacles, but you can’t give up on what you want because of them, and sometimes you will have to go through them alone. And in “Inside Out” the readers may understand that the main idea is that you won’t always be able to solve a problem easily, but even if you can’t solve the problem quickly, you will get through it even if it takes time.
