Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam and White Rose: A Comparison

In White Rose by Kip Wilson is a book that has a more suspenseful narrative of the Second World War while Cracker: The Best Dog in Vietnam by Cynthia Kadohata has a more straightforward narrative. Both  books are connected to wars, but the main characters have different perspectives and attitudes toward warfare. Both main characters participate in groups and when they work together they are better.  In Cynthia Kadohata’s book it talks about a dog called Cracker that had to be donated due to financial conditions and in Whire Rose by Kip Wilson it talks about a woman, called Shopie Scholl, who waznts to show the world that the things Nazism are wrong, she tried to show it to the world by trying to spread flyers around the university of Munich.

We can see that the two books ( White Rose and Cracker ) the main characters have different perspectives, In the White Rose Book by Kip Wilson Sophie and Hans, they fight Nazism secretly, she and Hans spread leaflets around the university of munich, making people realize what Nazism really does, but without showing who they are, and in the Book of Cracker made by author Cynthia Kadohata talks about Cracker and Rick, the positioning of Rick and Cracker are already very different from the positioning of Sophie and Hans, because Rick and Cracker they are fighting for their survival and victory, they (Cracker and Rick) enter enemy camps, Cracker sniffs out the bombs to see which way is safe and Rick protects Cracker.

When Cracker arrived in the military, she was very sad and scared about being separated from her owner, she would bark at everyone and try to bite people, and then people would say that she would not be a good sniffer and that she would not help the army. Cracker and other dogs had their owners who were drawn at the time, which was like a duo, Cracker was drawn with Rick, Rick was a man of good education

and came from a rich family, but he was different from his other family members , because when his family tried to get into a university he wanted to get into the army, Rick was a dog handler,  Rick would be responsible for taking care of Cracker, training, bathing, feeding, because for them to become a team they would have to be friends first. As time went by, Rick and Cracker got closer and Cracker saw that Rick was on her side, and then Cracker began to obey Rick’s commands. In both books the main characters work in groups. In Cracker’s book, all the soldiers started to recognize her and Rick, when people talked about her people already knew that she was a great sniffer, and Rick was a great trainer, thus forming a great group and getting better and better. when they are working together. In the White Rose book, Sophie had a group, but the one who was always on her side was Hans, if it weren’t for Hans, Sophie wouldn’t have been able to even spread all the pamphlets, because there were so many, Hans would spread them in one place while Sophie spread them on the other hand, in the pamphlets it said all the things that the Nazis did outside the sight of the German people, they killed black people, they killed people who had a disability or some serious health problem, they also killed people who were unable to work, like children, women, men. Sophie made the world aware of the bad things that Nazism did, with the help of Hans, when they worked in groups, they worked better.

In Cracker’s book, a lesson that the book give us is that you can’t give up on the person just because others say bad things about them, just like Rick did, when everyone was saying that Cracker was going to be a bad dog and that they had to put her to sleep, Rick bet everyone that she would be a good dog and he trained her and helped her, took good care of her, and everyone saw that she was a good sniffer. And in the book White Rose there is a message that you have to be brave or courageous to show the truth, Sophie was very brave in fighting Nazism, because anyone who was against the government and Nazism died, and she took the risk trying to show it to the world what did nazism really do.

Through this essay we compared the group work of the two books, we compared that the two main characters of the two books have an important role for the world, they were recognized by the world, and I contrasted the perspectives of the maincharacters in the case of the positioning of each one in war. At the end of it all we can see that the White Rose books and the Cracker book have more similarities than differences, and that sometimes working as a team is better than working individually.
